Our process
How We Test
No loaners, no sponsorships, no rankings for sale — just gear we bought ourselves, used for weeks, and were honest about.
Every recommendation on domaviahome comes from a machine or grinder that actually sat on one of our counters. We don't accept review units from manufacturers and we don't take payment to feature or rank a product. If a brand sends us something unsolicited, it gets tested under the exact same rules as anything we bought — or it doesn't get covered at all. That's the whole philosophy: buy it with our own money, live with it, then tell you the truth about it.
What we actually do
For espresso machines, testing isn't a single afternoon. We run each machine for weeks in a real home kitchen, pulling dozens of shots across different beans and grind settings to see how wide (or narrow) the dial-in range really is. We track temperature stability shot to shot, time the heat-up, and pay attention to steam power when we're texturing milk for actual lattes and cappuccinos — not just a demo pour. We also live with the daily grind of it: how annoying (or not) the portafilter is to lock in half-asleep, how long backflushing takes, and whether the build quality still feels solid after the honeymoon period wears off.
Grinders get their own checklist. We look at grind consistency across the range from espresso-fine to coarser filter settings, measure retention (how much old coffee hides in the chute and contaminates your next dose), and note static and clumping. We listen to how loud each grinder actually is at 6 a.m., and we spend real time dialing it in against a specific espresso machine to see how fine an adjustment its steps allow — a grinder that's gorgeous but can't hit a proper espresso grind gets marked down, no matter how nice it looks on a counter.
How we rank
We rank for real home users, not spec sheets. That means we weigh things like forgiveness for beginners, cleanup time, and footprint alongside pure shot quality — a machine that pulls a slightly better shot but is miserable to clean every day usually loses to one that's easier to live with. We're explicit about downsides: every pick on this site comes with who it's not for. You won't find a "best overall for everyone" list here, because that doesn't exist — you'll find "best for beginners," "best for small kitchens," "best for tinkerers," and similar calls, each matched to a specific kind of buyer.
How we stay independent
domaviahome is reader-supported through the Amazon Associates program. When you click a link on this site and buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you — the price you pay is identical either way. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. That commission is what funds buying the next machine or grinder to test; it never buys a spot on a ranking. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Keeping guides current
Coffee gear changes every year — prices shift, models get quietly revised, and new machines ship. We revisit our guides each season, re-check pricing language and availability, and update our "best of" lists as new gear earns a spot or an old favorite gets replaced. Every guide on this site is marked updated 2026 so you know the recommendation is current, not a leftover from years ago.
